TWENTY-Two soldiers from the Central Security Forces were reported killed, and 27 others injured, on Monday morning following a horrific road accident. Their truck overturned in the eastern Sinai Peninsula after the driver lost control over rugged terrain. According to Ahmed Al-Ansari, deputy head of Egypt's ambulance services, 11 injured soldiers were transferred to Arish Hospital and six others to the Maadi Military Hospital in Cairo. Defence Minister Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi allocated three military helicopters to transporting the bodies. For his part Abdel-Nasser Al-Tayeb, the head of North Sinai Prosecution, said in a statement on Tuesday there is no suspicion of criminal involvement in the truck crash. Al-Tayeb was responding to reports published by the Al-Arabiya news website and the Israeli Channel 10 to the effect that the vehicle was shot at by gunmen, with the shots aimed at the tires causing the vehicle to deviate from its course and roll down a steep hill near the eastern borders of Central Sinai. Health Ministry official Tarek Khater said that the vehicle was transferring Central Security troops based on the border with Israel to their camp. Prime Minister Hisham Kandil, who visited the injured victims at the Police Hospital in Cairo, said the accident was only a "road crash, and it is not true that masked men were behind it". Minister of Interior Ahmed Gamaleddin also visited the soldiers, and vowed to provide all the required medical and financial support to the soldiers and their families.
