ONLY a day before Ahli's football team qualified for the group stage of the African Champions League, the club's volleyball team won the African Volleyball Clubs Championship. Ahli beat Kenya's Prisons Club 3-0 to set a record of nine wins in the African championship. The event was held at the club's indoor hall at Gezira which saw a full house which supported the home team as if they were in a football stadium. Al-Gaish won the bronze medal with a 3-0 victory over the University club of Rwanda. Ahli and Prisons dominated the All-Star team selections. Dennis Onsomu of the Prisons club was named best receiver. Ahli's Alexander Shane was selected best setter. Shane, an Australian, was happy to win both titles -- the event and his first season with the Egyptian club. Shane told Al-Ahram Weekly that playing for a big club like Ahli was definitely a great boost to his career.
