President Al-Sisi's visit to Paris and the tragic death of officers during a raid on a militant hideout in Al-Wahat Al-Bahariya on Friday were two of the main issues in the Egyptian press this week. Newspapers highlighted the importance of the Paris visit. The front page of the daily Al-Ahram read: ‘First summit between Al-Sisi and Macron today', and that of the private daily Al-Watan said, ‘Al-Sisi in the Elysees… three files top his summit with Macron'. The private daily Al-Youm Al-Sabei banner had, ‘Signing 17 agreements in today's Al-Sisi-Macron summit'. Youssef Ayoub wrote in Al-Youm Al-Sabei that the visit came amid various regional and international changes that require that the two leaders meet and discuss. Terrorism is likely to top the agenda of the two leaders as France is one of the European states that has suffered most from terrorism. And Egypt has been trying to combat extremist thinking and attacks since 30 June 2013 when millions nationwide poured onto the streets demanding that the Islamist president Mohamed Morsi step down. However, terrorism will not be the only issue before the two leaders. The president's visit is filled with meetings with politicians and economists to discuss ways of boosting investment in Egypt, the main target the country has been working to reach. The sorrow that overwhelmed Egypt following the death of officers in Al-Wahat Al-Bahariya was clearly reflected in the press. In Al-Youm Al-Sabei, Gamal Asaad wrote that the terrorist attack near Al-Wahat Al-Bahariya will not be the last in the fight against terrorism in Egypt and the world. The justified grief for the death of the officers does not mean we are vanquished. "The latest attack will lead to more steadfastness and determination to protect the achievements of 30 June," Asaad wrote. The Al-Ahram editorial said the recent martyrdom of police officers in their confrontation with terrorist groups proves that the fight against terrorism is not easy. The edit pointed to various facts. First, the terrorists are being financed by external parties that provide them with money, weapons, training and safe havens if needed. Second, the main target of these groups is Egypt and third, the frequency of the terrorist attacks in recent weeks shows they are fighting their last battle. Fourth, recent political successes, including achievements like Palestinian reconciliation, prompted terrorist groups to increase their attacks to foil these successes. "But the most important fact is that terrorism can never foil a state," the edit concluded. Hani Labib noted that not a single day passes by without one reading about a terrorist attack or a member of the police or army being shot. As a result, public funerals has become a repeated scene. Thus, Labib added, it is only fair to care for the families of the martyrs and help them live a dignified life. "Perhaps the suggestion to keep them on the payroll of their jobs is a valid idea.
