You can dance Contemporary Dance Night is an independent initiative that started in Cairo three years ago. For six consecutive nights at the Falaki Theatre, Cairo, followed by two at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the audience is introduced to diverse contemporary dance performances and videos conceptualised and choreographed by six selected artists. Bassam Al-Zoghby was there to see them perform a number of shows such as Over the Horizons choreographed by Mounir Said, Like Sand and Songs by Zosia Jo Dowmunt, Axis by Dalia Al-Abd, Belbaladi by Ezzat Ismail and Cont; nue by Anna Maria Suijkerbuijk. El-Sawy Culturewheel organised a seminar on ending violence against women with keynote speakers actress and film producer Bushra, chairperson of the Association for Development and Enhancement of Women Iman Bibars, founder of the Hemaya (Protection) campaign Iman Ezzat and physician Amr Hassan. The seminar featured discussions about raising the awareness of the new generations and eliminating violence of various kinds. Lebanese Ambassador to Egypt Khaled Ziyada gave a reception marking the 71st Lebanese Independence Day in the presence of a large number of diplomats and officials. Present were Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Al-Arabi, Minister of Health Adel Adawi, Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali, head of the Egyptian-Lebanese Friendship Association Mohamed Al-Sharkawi, singer Azza Balbaa, actress Leqaa Seweidan, journalist and TV presenter Mufid Fawzi. Among the attending ambassadors were the French Ambassador André Parant, Bahraini Ambassador Sheikh Rashed Al-Khalifa, Saudi Ambassador Ahmed Qattan, Jordanian Ambassador Bishr Al-Khasawena, Iraqi Ambassador Diaa Al-Dabbas, Libyan Ambassador Mohamed Fayez Gabriel, Tunisian Ambassador Mahmoud Al-Khoumeiri, Moroccan Ambassador Mohamed Al-Alami, Algerian Ambassador Nadhir Al-Arabawi, Yemeni Ambassador Mohamed Al-Hesmi, Hungarian Ambassador Peter Kveck, Singaporean Ambassador Premjith Sadasivan and his Polish counterpart Michal Murkociński. The closing ceremony of the third Cairo Artworks and Media Mondial took place at the 6 October City with extensive celebrity presence. It was crowned by the attendance of renowned Syrian actor Doreid Laham and Egyptian actor Ahmed Bedeir. The Mondial honoured a number of figures including actors Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz, Khaled Zaki, Nelly Karim, Somaya Al-Khashab, Ragaa Al-Geddawi, Nermin Al-Fiki, Salwa Khattab, singer Samira Said, producer Gamal Al-Adl, TV presenter Tarek Allam and Syrian actor Bassem Yakhour. The Japan Foundation Cairo Office arranged an origami workshop at its library for introducing and teaching modular origami, presented by the Egyptian origamist Nirvan Talha, who has been dispatched by the Japan Foundation to Germany to pursuing a programme for teaching modular origami to interested artists. Although origami is originally a Japanese art, the Japanese people managed to spread it and teach its techniques to people all over the world. The Egyptian Embassy in Ethiopia gave two concerts of classical music, Samia Fakhri reports. Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt Joseph Amin pointed out that the concerts were organised in cooperation with the National Institute of Music in Ethiopia and the Russian Cultural Centre. The event was enriched by pianist Mohamed Saleh and cellist Shadi Hanna from the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, who played compositions by Beethoven and Brahms. Egyptian Ambassador to Addis Ababa Mohamed Idris confirmed that the concerts saw a strong presence by a large number of Ethiopian diplomats, businessmen, society ladies and young Ethiopians interested in music. Legendary French singer, composer and songwriter Enrico Macias gave a thrilling concert at a New Cairo seven star hotel in the presence of around 1,600 of his lovers including the Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou, the Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali and high profile figures and celebrities such as singer Hani Shaker, actress Nelly, actor Hussein Fahmi and his wife and the 2014 Miss Egypt Lara Debana. The concert was presented by former Miss Egypt Hoda Aboud. Macias sang for an hour and a half playing his guitar accompanied by Canadian singer Lynda Thalie; the duet danced and interacted, creating a spectacular performance. Macias expressed his happiness that the timing of his concert coincided with the visit of President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi to France. The United Nations Information Centre in Cairo (UNIC) organised an event commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People at El-Sawy Culturewheel's River Hall, in collaboration with the Union of Palestinian Women. The ceremony is the culmination of the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. It included releasing balloons in honour of all Palestinian cities. Speakers included the Palestine Ambassador to Cairo Gamal Al-Shoubki, the General Union of Palestinian Women's Vice-President Amal Al-Agha, and the Culturewheel founder Mohamed Al-Sawy. Among the attendees were the UNIC representative Nihal Helmi and Al-Ahram Weekly's Pack of Cards editor Reham El-Adawi. Traditional songs and dances were performed by the Palestinian children choir Abbad Al-Shams (The Sunflower) and an exhibition of traditional Palestinian products and foods also took place.
