Egyptian Security forces arrest leading Brotherhood figure El-Erian Essam El-Erian, vice president of the Freedom and Justice Party, was one of the few leading members of the Brotherhood still on the loose
Egyptian security forces arrested Muslim Brotherhood prominent figure Essam El-Erian in the early hours of Wednesday, Egyptian State television reported. The police recieved a tip that the vice president of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the Brotherhood's political wing, was hiding in an apartment in Cairo's uptown district of Fifth Settlement. They cordoned the place and arrested him. Pictures of the arrest, published on the interior ministry's social networking pages, show El-Erian smiling to the cameras. El-Erian, who had an arrest warrant issued against him since July, faces several charges including inciting violence against Brotherhood opponents before Mohamed Morsi was deposed as president. He also faces charges of funding violent acts and thuggery. During his time in hiding, El-Erian pre-recorded a number of video messages, shown on Al-Jazeera TV channel. Most notable of these messages was directed to the country's current administrators or what El-Erian described as ‘coup leaders', demanding they recognize their ‘"mistakes" and “confess that they've sided with one particular faction against the other.” El-Erian was one of the few high-ranking Muslim Brotherhood members to remain at large after most leading figures of the group along with Morsi were arrested and jailed. The arrests came after a six-week vigil demanding Morsi's reinstatement, before the police violently dispersed it killing and injuring hundreds. On 23 September the Muslim Brotherhood, which was registered as an NGO, was banned. A case is currently being reviewed to dissolve the FJP after Egypt's State Commissioners' Authority, a body that provides non-binding legal advises, recommended its disbanding. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/85102.aspx
