Ahly's Sunshine Stars clash to be played behind closed doors Interior ministry says 'it will be difficult' to allow spectators to attend Ahly's African Champions League semi-final clash against Sunshine Stars on 21 October
Ahly will be deprived of their fans when they take on Nigeria's Sunshine Stars in the second-leg of the African Champions League semi-final on 21 October due to ongoing security concerns. According to Ahram's Arabic-language sports website, the interior ministry has sent a letter to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) to inform them that it would be difficult to ensure the safety of fans if they attended the anticipated game. Egyptian authorities have enforced a crowd ban since February's Port Said disaster, which left over 70 fans dead when Masry's supporters stormed the pitch to confront Ahly's visiting contingent following the end of an ill-tempered Egyptian Premier League game. Zamalek, Ahly's Cairo rivals, were the only team to enjoy fan support since then, having faced Ghana's Berekum Chelsea in a Champions League group-stage game last month before around 3,000 supporters at the Military Academy Stadium. The die-hard Zamalek fans were allowed to attend the match after threatening to storm the stadium. Ahly are favourites to reach the Champions League final for the first time since 2008 after holding Sunshine Stars to a 3-3 draw in a thrilling affair in Nigeria.
