Olympic boxing official Garip Erkuyumcu of Turkey was found dead in his London hotel room, the International Boxing Association said Friday. "Garip was loved and respected by everyone who knew him and he will be missed by all of us at AIBA," the governing body's president C.K. Wu said in a statement. Turkish Boxing Federation chief Bayram Altug said a colleague found 73-year-old Erkuyumcu dead in his bed on Thursday. A heart attack was suspected but autopsy results were expected to determine the exact cause of death, the Turkish boxing body said. Erkuyumcu was a member of AIBA's refereeing and judging commission and would have been assisting boxing referees at the London Olympics. Erkuyumcu's body would be flown back to Turkey next week, the national federation said.
