Egypt sent a letter to the chairman of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in objection of Addis Ababa's plans to unilaterally move ahead with the second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) despite the lack of a legally binding agreement with the downstream countries Egypt and Sudan. The letter explained the latest developments concerning the long-running dispute over the controversial dam and included Egypt's refusal of what Ethiopia announced about its intention to forge ahead with filling the Renaissance Dam during the current flood season," read the statement. The letter also expressed "Cairo's full rejection of the Ethiopian approach, which based on forcing a fait accompli on the downstream countries through unilateral measures tantamount to explicit violation of the rules of international law," the ministry added.
