Hana Al-Shalabi's detention tantamount to death sentence: Palestinian minister

Palestinian Authority Minister for Prisoner Affairs Issa Qaraqe expects that an Israeli military court will issue a final decision regarding the 38-day hunger striker Hana Al-Shalabi within two days. “We don't expect a favourable decision from the court judge; he will probably present Shalabi's defence with unacceptable resolutions,” said Qaraqe.
The minister mentioned in a media statement Sunday that Arab and international pressure is being exerted on Israel to release Al-Shalabi. Qaraqe hopes that the pressure succeeds, especially that her physical state is deteriorating.
“The state of health of Al-Shalabi is very dangerous. We are very worried about it and any decision prolonging her detention is tantamount to a death sentence — a crime by the occupation authorities since the detained woman is held without charge,” he said.
Qaraqe stated that the number of detained Palestinians on hunger strikes has now reached 30, some in solidarity with Al-Shalabi and others in protest against administrative detention.
