Jimmy Carter arrives in Cairo to follow 3rd-round runoff polls Former US president to visit polling stations, oversee vote-counting and meet with political, civil society representatives
Former US president Jimmy Carter arrived in Cairo on Monday to observe third-stage runoff elections in Egypt's first post-Mubarak parliamentary polls. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Carter is scheduled to visit several polling stations throughout Cairo and oversee the vote-counting process. While in Cairo, the former US president is also expected to meet with a number of civil society representatives and political parties, along with independent parliamentary candidates and government officials, to discuss the latest developments in Egypt's post-revolution political arena. Carter is head of the Carter Centre, a US-based NGO devoted to promoting democracy. The centre has been allowed to monitor Egypt's polls despite official rejection of international oversight by the country's ruling military council. The Carter Centre is considered one of the most important NGOs in the world in terms of international electoral supervision. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/31354.aspx
