Arab leaders congratulate Sisi on his re-election

A number of Arab leaders have congratulated President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on his re-election and affirmed their strong ties with Egypt.

El-Sisi won a second term with 97 percent of the vote in an election in which 41 percent of the electorate cast their ballots, official results showed.

The crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, called El-Sisi on Monday to congratulate him, highlighting "special ties" between the governments and the people of the UAE and Egypt, El-Sisi's office said in a statement.

The Emirati state news agency WAM said that both the president of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, and prime minister and ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum sent El-Sisi letters of congratulations.

Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir also called El-Sisi to commend his presidential win. During the telephone conversation, he stressed Sudan's keeness to perserve its "strong and deep-rooted relations with Egypt and continue consultations and coordination between the two countries on issues of mutual interest," El-Sisi's office said in a separate statement.

El-Sisi also recieved telephone calls from Jordan's King Abdullah and Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa.

Also on Monday, El-Sisi received phone calls from international allies, including the US' President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The White House said in a statement that Trump congratulated the Egyptian president and “the two leaders affirmed the strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt.”

During their telephone conversation, Putin "reaffirmed Russia's intention to further develop mutually beneficial cooperation in many areas, including energy, industry and transport," the Kremlin said on its official website.
