The hopes of Egypt's fencing star Alaa Abouelkassem to win another Olympic medal in the men's individual foil were dashed after he lost to Italy's Daniele Garozzo 15-13 in the round of 16 at the Rio Games on Sunday. Abouelkassem led 7-3 but then Garozzo gained momentum, going level at 7-7 before opening up a 14-11 lead. The Egyptian star tried to come from behind after making it 14-13 but Garozzo eventually snatched a win to reach the quarter finals. Garozzo has earlier eliminated another Egyptian in Tarek Ayad, beating him 15-8 in the round of 32. Abouelkassem, who became the first African fencer to win an Olympic medal after clinching silver at the 2012 London Games, proved too strong for Czech Alexander Choupenitch in the round of 32, winning 15-8. The 25-year-old suffered a scare just a few days before the Games got underway after hurting his ankle but his doctor confirmed that he would be fit to play.
