The infamous Egyptian thug, Rafat Abdel Shakour, aka Khanoufa, committed suicide in Tora Prison where he was detained, pending investigation into his charges.‎
Khanoufa, who was widely branded by the media as the most dangerous thug in Cairo, took his own life while in solitary confinement after using his jail uniform to hang himself inside the cell.
The suicide was discovered this Saturday morning, only four days after his arrest. Abdel Shakour was 33.‎
Khanoufa, which means “nasally (voice),” mainly plied his trade in Cairo's Masr Al-Qadima district. He faced 12 charges and was sentenced to 10 years in a high security jail in 2009.‎
Among the accusations against him was instigating the blockage of Salah Salem Road early in July and attacking a police station in Masr Al-Qadima, an incident that saw one man gunned down.‎
He was also indicted on charges of persistent extortion and acts of "thuggery," a charge laid greatly on pillagers, looters, mercenaries and people who used violence during and after Egypt's January 25 Revolution.
Khanoufa was arrested on Tuesday, 23 August (four days ago) in Masr Al-Qadima as the residents of the neighbourhood cheered for the police for capturing him.
Coincidentally, Khanoufa was in the same prison complex where ousted president Mubarak's sons were held.
