Egyptian activist Mahmoud Shaaban claims to have been kidnapped and interrogated for nine hours by security officers, before being dumped in the desert.
Shaaban, who was says he was released this morning, claims he was kidnapped by security officers at midnight two days ago while on his way home in the El Awayed suburb in Alexandria. The activist says he was then blindfolded and taken to an undisclosed location where the questioning began.
Shaaban said that the interrogating officers mocked the 25 January revolution while questioning him.
“Do not think that this was a revolution,” Shaaban claims the officers told him, “these are just a series of events and we will put a stop to them.”
Shaaban, a member of the popular campaign to support ElBaradei, said that he managed to send an SMS to one of his friends to inform him of the kidnapping. He was then taken to an unidentified place where he was intensely interrogated about his role in the ElBaradei campaign and his links to the April 6 Movement. The interrogation lasted for nine hours, during which, the officers threatened that they would transfer him to the military prosecution.
After the interrogation, a tied and blindfolded Shaaban was put in a microbus that took him to the desert road and dumped him there. Shaaban says that when they reached the desert, the officers lied to him and told him that they were at the headquarters of the prosecution. They then drove off, leaving him there.
