Published in Ahram Online on 31 - 08 - 2014

In Egypt, where according to latest statistics, breast cancer accounts to 37.5 percent of all cancer cases, The Breast Cancer Foundation celebrates its ten years of continuous work of linking together the efforts of the government, civil society and the community to raise awareness, provide checkups and put an end to the social culture that still holds women back from confronting the disease early.
Dr. Mohamed Shaalan, Professor of Surgical oncology and Director of the Early Detection Unit at the National Cancer Institute at Cairo University and the chairperson of the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt (BCFE) stressed that BCFE celebrates this fruitful decade by offering free mammograms for any Egyptian woman above the age of 40 starting Sunday.
The hotline offered for this service is 19417.
BCFE has served Egyptian women all over the country with many awareness campaigns and health caravans. It has reached a total of 44,173 woman and offered 11,066 mammogram and 250 mastectomy procedures. These services are in addition to providing 7,246 rehabilitation and diagnostic services and contributing to various research in the field locally and worldwide.
When BCFE was launched in 2004 it was the first organisation of its kind to be affiliated with the social solidarity ministry in Egypt.
