SINGAPORE: Two children were among the dead after a clash in the eastern part of Philippines between police and communist rebels, an army commander was quoted as saying by local media. The clash erupted in a village in Labo town of Camarines Norte province Saturday when troops responded to calls that guerrillas were extorting money from residents. Lieutenant Colonel Epimaco Macalisang said the children, aged 10 and 7, were found dead after the clash. Two rebels were also killed. The children were believed to be sons of one of the slain rebels. A 14-year-old daughter was also injured and treated in hospital, Macalisang said. Communist rebels have been fighting the Philippine government since the late 1960s, making it one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia. The violence comes after a number were killed in the southern part of the country last week, heightening worries that the country is teetering towards violent unrest.
