A mortar attack on Karam Al Qawadis checkpoint Friday severely injured a conscript in Egypt's North Sinai city of Sheikh Zuwaid, Al Bawaba News cited a police source. The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, added, the injured conscript was taken to Al Arish Military Hospital for treatment. No further details were released. The Sinai Peninsula has witnessed a string of deadly attacks against security personnel and civilians since former president Mohamed Morsi was ousted July 2013 amid mass street protests. Over the past two years, over 500 security personnel, mostly conscripts on duty, were killed by mortar attacks and car bombings. The Islamic State (IS)-linked Wilayat Sinai terrorist group has repeatedly claimed responsibility for the attacks. A 22-year old conscript was shot and injured in the head in May while on duty at the same checkpoint. In Sep. 2014, Karam Al Qawadis checkpoint came under attack, 30 security personnel were killed and 32 injured prompting the Supreme Military Council to adopt a new anti-terror strategy including constructing a buffer zone on the eastern borders with the Gaza strip.
