Saied Out for Red Hair (19 April 2003) Troublemaker Ibrahim Saied could have made his debut for Everton against Liverpool if it wasn't for his dyed red hair! The controversial defender, now 31, joined the Toffees from Ahli on loan in 2003, an adventure that he ended only in few weeks without playing a single competitive game. He was set to make his first Premiership appearance in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park after Swedish full-back Niclas Alexandersson picked up an injury. But no sooner Everton coach David Moyes saw the red-haired Saied than he kept him out, obviously because red is Liverpool's favorite and only color. Throughout his career, Saied changed the color of his hair more than once but picking red dye before facing the Reds was definitely an ill-advised choice. Unfair Mido Red Card Sparks Scuffle with Terry, Lampard (27 August 2005) An aerial collision caused Mido to receive his marching orders and get involved in a spat with John Terry and Frank Lampard during Chelsea's 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. As he jumped, the charismatic lad inadvertently elbowed his challenger Asier del Horno. However, Rob Styles didn't hesitate to give him a straight red card, a decision that was widely deemed harsh. Later on, England pair Terry and Lampard verbally abused Mido while Jermain Defoe tried to hold down the referee's hand, to no avail of course. The former Zamalek prodigy was almost in tears on his way to the tunnel, with his then teammate Nourredine Naybet trying to comfort him. Mido is renowned for his antics but on this occasion he was a victim of bad refereeing. Not only was he unfairly dismissed but was also handed a three-match ban. Ghaly Loses Four Teeth in One Horrendous Challenge (2 January 2007) Hossam Ghaly was still enjoying his Tottenham heyday when he lost four of his teeth in a horrendous challenge. His injury was severe but showed how incredible his endurance is. The international ace was caught in the face by Portsmouth defender Noe Pamarot's boot to get seriously hurt in the opening minutes of the match. While he was bleeding heavily from his mouth, Ghaly left the pitch for around ten minutes and commendably returned after receiving treatment to carry on playing till half-time. He made way for Danny Murphy in the break. Ghaly wasn't awarded a foul when he was kicked but his exceptional tenacity earned him respect and admiration among Spurs' fans, at least for a while. Shirt Tantrum Ends Ghaly's Prime (10 May 2007) The unpleasant incident virtually put an end to Ghaly's adventure at White Hart Lane and saw his career take a turn for the worse. The Ahli prodigy was sent in during a game against Blackburn Rovers only to be substituted 15 minutes later, a controversial decision by Martin Jol that evidently infuriated the holding midfielder. On his way to the dugout, Ghaly took off his Tottenham jersey and threw it angrily amid loud boos from Hotspurs' fans, who once thought highly of him. He didn't feature for Tottenham after his infamous tantrum, which he said was justifiable, till he parted ways with the London outfit. My Name Is Mido and I'm Not a Terrorist! (26 August 2007) Mido had a lot of excitement in the first couple of months he spent with Middlesbrough but he particularly hit the headlines after being dubbed a 'terrorist' by some Newcastle supporters. During a 2-2 draw at the Riverside, some of the away fans chanted racial and anti-Islam slurs, saying 'Mido, he's got a bomb you know'. The towering striker's reply came in the form of an equalizer two minutes from the half-hour mark, to cancel out the Magpies' 1-0 lead. While celebrating his goal, Mido ran towards Newcastle spectators and made a shushing gesture to receive a yellow card. His then coach Gareth Southgate bravely defended his reaction and the Egyptian nomad later took part in an anti-racism campaign named 'Kick It Out'. Zaki's One-off Bicycle Kick Goal (18 October 2008) It's arguably Amr Zaki's best-ever goal and one of most sensational Premiership strikes in the 2008-2009 season. He was at the peak of his career with Wigan Athletic back then. The robust marksman sent home an astounding bicycle kick from inside the area near the edge, connecting with a pinpoint cross from winger Antonio Valencia to complete a brace against Liverpool. Wigan eventually lost the game but Zaki stole the limelight in England for quite a while. He won praise from his then manager Steve Bruce and many pundits too, including England legend Alan Shearer. Shortly afterwards, he was reportedly eyed by Liverpool and Spanish titans Real Madrid, but eventually ended up making a return to Zamalek! The Beginning of Zaki's Collapse (17 January 2009) Zaki hit ten goals in the first half of the season but started to lose his touch past the halfway mark. His sudden dip in form definitely took a toll on Wigan. Manchester City were maintaining a 1-0 lead when the international hitman had a golden chance to bring the score level, he didn't leave up to prominence though. With the goal at his mercy, the Zak headed the ball high over from close range after a Lee Cattermole deflected header struck the crossbar and went into his path. The 84th-minute wasted chance could have ended the match in a stalemate but City eventually won the match. Zaki hasn't scored in the Premier League ever since. Elmohamady Shows What He's Made of (16 January 2011) Like Ghaly, Ahmed Elmohamady's stamina was tested the hard way but he didn't disappoint. The 23-year-old went down with blood pouring from his upper lip upon colliding with midfielder Alan Smith only after two minutes of the Tyne-Wear derby between Sunderland and Newcastle. Elmo played till the 89th minute although his wound needed eight stiches later. It was his second head blow in the space of two weeks, following a concussion he sustained against Blackburn on January 1st. The Sunderland wing-back, whose maiden Premier League season has been so far impressive, was acclaimed for his endurance. Hopefully he won't imitate Ghaly's shirt tantrum at some point this term!
