Bundesliga leaders Schalke 04 slumped to a surprising 1-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen while Werder Bremen ended their three-match losing streak with a 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday. In Gelsenkirchen, Schalke were stunned by an impressive performance from Leverkusen's goalkeeper Rene Adler who denied Kevin Kuranyi and Lincoln in numerous occasions. Stefan Kiessling sealed the victory for the visitors five minutes from time with a superb solo effort as he dribbled past two defenders before sending a clinical finish. Elsewhere, Bremen threw a one-goal lead twice to tie bottom side Monchengladbach.
Bremen drew with Monchengladbach Cameroonian international left back Pierre Wome gave Bremen the lead in the 11th minute but Michael Delura needed only six minutes to level the score. Croatian midfielder Juric Vranjes scored what seemed to be a winner for Bremen six minutes from time with a long-range low drive. Nando Rafael grabbed the equalizer for Monchengladbach three minutes into stoppage time with a powerful volley from a tight angle. Earlier on Friday, second placed Stuttgart were held at home to a goalless draw by Hertha Berlin, while Bavarian giants Bayern Munich were back in track with a 2-1 home win over Wolfsburg. Despite defeat, Schalke remain in charge of Bundesliga table with 49 points, five ahead of second-placed Stuttgart.
