Israel expands attacks in Gaza, 5 troops killed in resistance operations
Published in Daily News Egypt on 13 - 01 - 2025

Israeli media reported on Monday that five Israeli soldiers were killed and 11 others wounded in a targeted attack on a military force northern Gaza, as Israel's forces intensified their operations, leading to new civilian casualties. The attack, which occurred when an anti-tank missile struck an Israeli military unit, resulted in the death and injury of soldiers from the Nahal Brigade.
Earlier reports indicated that an explosion in Beit Hanoun caused a building to collapse on Israeli army forces. Helicopters evacuated the wounded soldiers to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, with sources describing the event as one of the most significant security breaches in recent days. This attack is the latest in a series of Palestinian resistance operations in Beit Hanoun, where at least 10 Israeli soldiers were killed in less than 72 hours.
In a statement, the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad Movement, claimed responsibility for planting an advanced bomb in Beit Hanoun, which targeted and destroyed an Israeli military vehicle, killing and injuring its crew. Israeli forces have been conducting a sustained military operation in northern Gaza for about two weeks, with significant casualties on both sides. Since the operation began on 5 October, the Israeli military has lost 50 soldiers, while the broader conflict has resulted in the deaths of approximately 5,000 Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Monday morning intensified, causing further civilian casualties. According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, 50 Palestinians were killed in the northern Gaza Strip, with numerous homes and neighborhoods in Gaza City hit in rapid succession. The Al-Daraj neighborhood alone saw seven deaths, and other areas such as Al-Zeitoun, Sheikh Radwan, and Al-Jawazat were also targeted. The raids continued throughout the day, resulting in more deaths and injuries.
In the southern Gaza Strip, airstrikes targeted vehicles, killing four people in Rafah, while similar bombings in Khan Yunis left one Palestinian dead and others wounded. The central Gaza Strip was also struck, with a raid targeting a house in the Al-Nuseirat refugee camp.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported two massacres over a 24-hour period, with 19 bodies recovered and 71 others injured. Since the conflict began on October 7, the death toll in Gaza has reached 46,584, with over 109,000 wounded. As the violence escalates, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in Gaza, with widespread devastation and ongoing airstrikes.
