Egyptian authorities confirmed the execution of six men convicted of forming a terrorist cell dubbed the "Arab Sharkas Cell," a judicial source told the CBC Extra TV channel on Sunday. A military court had sentenced 7 militants to death, one of them in absentia, and 2 to life in prison, over charges of carrying out attacks against military buildings and warships. Joint army and police forces raided a deserted warehouse in the Arab Sharkas area, Qaliubiya Governorate on March 19, 2014 and arrested the terrorist cell, which led to the death of two army officers and six militants affiliated to Ansar Bayt Al Maqdis, an Egypt-based jihadist group loyal to Islamic State (IS). The defendants had appealed the death sentence but the military court upheld the verdict. This is the second death sentence carried out by Egyptian authorities against Islamist militants, the first being the execution of Mahmoud Ramadan who threw children from rooftops in Alexandria during violent demonstrations of pro-Morsi protestors in July 2013.
