Perfume helps you finish off your outfit, and applying it correctly is just as important as picking the right scent. It's cool to have a signature scent that adds to the ambiance of who you are and one that people remember you by.
But deciding on your signature scent is only half the journey. The second half is how to make it last throughout the day.
Here are a few expert tricks to help your fragrance last longer:
- Perfume lasts longer when your skin is hydrated. Apply fragrance-free moisturiser to your body to help you get more bangs for your perfume buck.
- Layering products from the same line is another effective way to make a fragrance last. You might use the scented body gel, treat skin with the body lotion and then spray the eau-du-perfume spray on top. The combination of products will help the scent to maintain its fullness throughout the day.
- Apply perfume directly after you shower. Spritz some on your skin after drying off and before putting on your clothes. Your skin will absorb the scent better, and you won't run the risk of staining your clothes or jewellery.
- Put perfume on your body's pulse points, including the wrists, neck, inner arms and backs of knees and ears. These points emit the most heat, allowing the perfume to diffuse out from the body.
- Avoid rubbing your wrists together after applying perfume as the friction and heat increases the interaction between the perfume and the skin's natural oils which can change the scent.
- Instead of misting perfume directly on your hair (alcohol dries it out), spritz it on your brush so that it will be dispersed more evenly and subtly, leaving a gentle scent in your wake as you move through your day.
- Like your wrists, the areas behind your ears are considered “pulse points” where the veins are closest to the skin and thus generate more heat and amplify your scent.
- It may seem odd, but putting perfume on your back strikes the perfect balance between giving your fragrance a long shelf life and not having it be too overbearing for those around you. Pull the collar of your top back, and put some perfume down your back between your clothing and your skin. If it's a light fragrance, do it twice. Your natural movements will help diffuse the scent more subtly.
- The inside of the elbows is a more tucked-away alternative to your wrists. To maximise the diffusion of your fragrance, be sure to moisturise your arms or any other part of your body before you spritz on your scent.
- Like the insides of your elbows, the areas behind your knees are pulse points. The big rule says that heat rises, so if you apply fragrance on your lower limbs it will evaporate throughout the day.
- Spray calves and ankles with perfume to waft your fragrance, wherever you go.
- Dab a small amount of perfume in your belly button. It's a surprising area of the body which holds fragrance well, due to its warmth.
- Store your perfume properly. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Heat and light can degrade some of the ingredients making your perfume less fragrant. Opt for a cool, dark nook for storage.
- Finally, choose notes wisely.Bright floral, citrus or green scents are uplifting and fresh, but they are notorious for not lasting long. Pick a scent that has woody or spiced notes to give your perfume a longer wear time since these notes are more potent and powerful by nature.
