CAIRO: Romanian Ambassador to Egypt Gheorghe Dumitru praised the peaceful atmosphere that dominated the electoral process during the first phase of Egypt's parliamentary elections last week. He congratulated the Egyptian people on such an experience, which will pave the way for achieving the democratic change. Last week Egypt held the first phase of elections for the People's Assembly, the lower house of Egypt's bicameral parliament. It is the country's first election since a popular uprising toppled the former regime earlier this year. In a speech at the Romanian Embassy in Cairo, Dumitru said his country witnessed a similar revolutionary experience in 1991 that led to achieving notable reform in both economics and politics. He said Romania managed to achieve democratic change and create strong ties with different countries. He said that Romania enjoys historic relations with Egypt, stressing the need for strengthening such relations in different fields. He added that both the Romanian and Egyptian revolutions opened the door for serious democratic change. Dumitru expressed his country's readiness to provide Egypt with full support during the current transitional period, through transferring the necessary experience that Egypt needs currently.
