CAIRO - The ‘Buy Egyptian' campaign was launched in the country's shopping malls Friday to help cash-strapped traders overcome the slump that took its toll due to political unrest. The campaign aims at boosting aggregate demand and help the economy get back on track. Around 4,500 factories have shut down since February, according to the State-run Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). Inflation stood at 9.1 per cent in November year-on-year, up from 7.1 per cent a month earlier The 'shopping fever' comes in response to an ambitious initiative launched last Tuesday by media tycoon Amr Adeeb, who called on the Egyptians to buy all sorts of locally made foodstuffs and commodities. Adeeb told millions of viewers on his talk show, ‘Al-Qahira el-Youm' (Cairo Today) that the aim of his initiative is to inject a massive dose of cash into the economy, in order to reassure investors after the unrest and uncertainty following the toppling of Hosni Mubarak in February.
