Malaysia warned over "other" national flag
Published in Bikya Masr on 02 - 09 - 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: Police would investigate the waving of the Sang Saka Malaya flag if there was a police report lodged on it, said Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Many residents in the country told Bikyanews.com that they support the move, saying it reflects national pride and should not be granted as freedom of expression.
Following this, he said legal action could also be taken against the group which questioned the status of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang.
On certain groups waving the Sang Saka Malaya flag during the Merdeka Eve celebration at Dataran Merdeka on Friday, he said those who were unhappy with the incident could lodge a police report.
"We cannot insult the Jalur Gemilang and say it is a catastrophe. We should not question this symbol of the nation," he told in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
He said as Malaysians who claimed to be loyal to the country, questioning the national flag should be avoided.
"Rightly, nobody should question the status of the Jalur Gemilang and want to replace it with another.
"We should accept the reality that the declaration of the national flag had been made by the prime minister at the time," he said.
On the allegation of the involvement of some political party leaders in secret society activities, he said the government would not compromise on the matter and legal action would be taken against them.
