CAIRO: A truck accident in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has left at least 21 soldiers dead and two dozen others injured, the country's state-run media reported on Monday. The MENA news agency reported that those injured have been taken for medical attention. It comes as the Egyptian military continues to boost activities in the Sinai Peninsula over the past two months since an attack on a border outpost in early August left dozens of soldiers dead in a militant attack. Cairo has since increased its attacks on what it describes as “terrorist” strongholds, which has included air raids in the peninsula. Media reports said there was no immediate indication that the accident had any relation to an attack on the military. An unnamed Egyptian interior ministry spokesperson quoted by MENA said the driver of a troop carrier “had lost control of the vehicle on rough terrain, causing it to overturn.” Health ministry official Tarek Khater told the Associated Press that the vehicle was transferring members of the Central Security Forces based on the border with Israel to their camp when the accident happened.
