SINGAPORE: A female Indonesian student was gang-raped by 6 men while traveling on a minivan in South Jakarta on Friday evening, the Jakarta Post and activists reported. “The criminals then dumped her on the side of a railroad track in Kebayoran Lama after the attack,” a friend of the victim told Bikyamasr.com in an email detailing the attack. According to the friend, the young nursing school student, had been on her way home in the evening on Friday as a group of men attacked her and knocked her out before they took turns raping the young woman. “She came to beside the railroad track and was shocked to discover that she had been the victim of a gang-rape,” another friend, Rizal, was quoted as saying by kompas.com on Sunday. “Once she felt able, she took a cab home. No valuables were missing,” Rizal said. The young woman told her family what had happened on Saturday afternoon and they took her to South Jakarta Police headquarters to report the case. South Jakarta Police chief detective Budi Irawan confirmed the report. “We have sent our team to verify the report,” Budi said. On September 1 last year, a passenger, known only by her initials RSR, 27, was also gang-raped by four men on board a minivan. The rapists also stole her cell phone before dumping her on a quiet street. Women's rights activists in the country are demanding that justice be had for women who face near constant sexual violence in the country. “We struggle to get the government and police to follow through with these investigations, because they often just put it aside and blame the victim,” Janita Yunitra, a women's rights blogger in the capital, Jakarta, told Bikyamasr.com. “Women are still second class citizens and when we are raped, assaulted and killed, we are questioned for being in the position in the first place. It is disgusting,” she added. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/zzn7C Tags: Gang Rape, Indonesia, Jakarta, Student Section: East Asia, Human Rights, Latest News, Women
