The Rwandan Hutu rebels attacked a village in the North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo overnight into Tuesday, killing five people and burning several houses, according to a local official. The Rwandan Hutu rebels, known by their French acronym FDLR (Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda) raided the village of Beleusa, said Justin Mukanya, administrator of Rutshuru territory. On Dec. 20, Congo's president Joseph Kabila promised to neutralize rebels who have killed hundreds of people in attacks this year in the country's east. The Congolese army launched an operation against the rebels last December. A UN peacekeeping mission, which includes a force intervention brigade with a special mandate to take offensive military action against rebel groups, is also in the region.
