Growing food efficiently
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 21 - 08 - 2008

THE FOOD Industries Technology Centre, an affiliate to the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), organised a one-week workshop in cooperation with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation to set a strategy for the use of new and renewable energies in the food sector. Hani Barakat, head of the Technology Department at the MTI announced that representatives from the ministries of electricity and energy, environment, scientific research and higher education, in addition to members of a number of research centres, were invited to attend.
The workshop, which started Monday, aims at identifying a strategy to encourage the use of renewable energy in the food industries sector, reducing cost price, improving product quality and opening new markets for Egyptian food products.
The workshop programme also includes a discussion on methods of recycling industrial wastes, on how to apply international standards and on identifying the best ways to manage energy in the industrial sector. Also scheduled to be discussed is a plan for the support of Egyptian technological centres by German centres, providing them with the latest German technology for the benefit of Egyptian factories. The workshop also includes a session on providing training programmes for Egyptian technicians and engineers working in the food industry.
