The annual group exhibition currently showing at Salama art gallery includes work by Mervat Shazly. Displaying her unique experiments and constantly developing her concept of form with a view to transcending any conflict with realism or academic rules towards a non-arbitrary, organic harmony. Egyptian and especially Nubian heritage forms a central reference point for this symbolic, expressionist and automatic content. Colour is a fundamental tool, distinctive in its unique blends and its capacity to echo nature and heritage without abiding by restrictive, traditional rules. Shazly carefully chooses her formal elements, miniature motifs and idea to create gorgeously developing pieces. This is not the first time she has demonstrated interest in the south of Egypt. Her journey with the region had already begun when she focused on Nubian culture in her master's thesis, titled “The impact of the Nubian environment on Egyptian artists” (1998).
