The four-day African Fencing Seniors Championships at Cairo's International Indoor Complex saw 10 African countries competing in 12 disciplines in epee, foil and sabre for both men and women, individual and teams. The tournament saw tough and thrilling matches despite the low spectator turn-out. The players showed a real rivalry as their clashing of swords echoed in the hall.
Host nation Egypt overpowered its main North Africa rivals Algeria and Tunisia to top the final standings with a total of 64 points. Algeria came second with 52 points and Tunisia third place at 40.
Egypt's 2012 London Olympic silver medalist Alaaeldin Abouelkassem easily claimed the gold medal in the men's foil after beating Tunisian Mohamed Samandi. The bronze went to Egypt's Essam Mohamed and Ivory Coast's Jeremy Fafe Kenfuel.
In the men's epee, Ayman Fayez took the gold medal after beating Gunput Sabya who won the silver while Egypt's Ahmed El-Saghir and Alexandre Bouzaid both claimed the bronze medal.
In the men's sabre, the Tunisians swept the board. Fares Fergani, Hichem Sinadai, Iheb Ben Chaabene won the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively while Egypt's Ziad Al-Sissi claimed the other bronze.
In the epee men's teams Egypt won the gold followed by Morocco and Senegal. The Tunisians won the men's sabre team event. The Egyptians were second while Senegal claimed the bronze medal.
In the women's individual events, Cote d'Ivoire's Ghabi Gwaldys Sakoa claimed the gold medal in the epee while Egyptian siblings Salwa and Shirwit Gaber claimed the silver and bronze medals. Tunisia's Maya Mansouri clinched the other bronze medal of the event.
In the women's sabre, the gold and silver medals went to Tunisia's Azza Besbes and Yosra Gharbi while the two bronze medals went to Egypt's Maram Ahmed and Logayn Faramawe.
Tunisia's Ines Boubakri also clinched the women's foil gold. Egypt's Yara Al-Sharkawi claimed the silver medal while bronze went to Algeria's Anissa Khelfaoui and Egypt's Noura Mohamed.
The Egyptian Cleopatras dominated the women's team events. Egypt collected the gold medal in the foil followed by Algeria and Tunisia. The hosts also bagged the gold medal in the sabre. Silver went to Tunisia and bronze to Senegal.
However, the Tunisian women avenged their foil and sabre losses to the hosts, taking the gold medal in the epee teams. Egypt claimed the silver and South Africa the bronze.
