“Slowly”, by Amre Heiba. Slowly moves from William Empson's poem Missing Dates, a frequent source of inspiration for the artist. Instead of being a mere illustration of the poem itself, the show rather wants to express the feelings aroused by the text. In line with his previous production, Heiba portrays a dystopian world where colours, figures and spaces work together to recreate the sense if discomfort and violence of a world changing for the worst (Closing 7 January).
"Al Masry Al Youm – Interferences with a Journal", an exhibition
by Hisham El-Zeiny. For the show, Mashrabia has selected a group of mixed media collages realised on the pages of Al Masry Al Youm, one of the most popular newspapers in Egypt. Hence, the title puns on a reflection on nowadays Egypt, while tackling the role of the traditional media at a crucial time for Egyptian history.
Silhouettes of football players overlap and mix with articles and news about politics, economy and culture metaphorically addressing the need for dynamism and change reclaimed by the liberal youth on the ‘playgrounds' of society (17 January- 25 February).
