Improving your appearance
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 27 - 10 - 2015

It's no secret that attractive people are perceived more favourably by others. Our appearance is what creates that all-important first impression, and nothing adds to a good appearance like self-confidence.
So, to enhance your self-confidence, you should start making minor changes in your daily routine, like improving your posture, making eye contact, practicing a firm handshake and employing a smooth body language. Step in with confidence, apply the changes described below, and watch the world fall at your feet.
Whitening your teeth: Whiter teeth can positively sway a person's judgement, and people with pearly whites are viewed as having higher levels of confidence. To improve the shade of your teeth for a low cost, you can try a whitening solution or quick do-it-yourself kits. For an even cheaper solution, you can use hydrogen peroxide.
A proper haircut: Picking a haircut that suits you is more difficult than it is often made out to be. Many of us are unaware of our great haircut potential. The most important factor to consider is the shape of your face. Identify the most-experienced stylist near you and pay him or her a visit to find out what your ideal haircut could be.
Posture: Walk tall, with your eyes at mid-level. Sit up straight or lean back if you must, but never hunch forward. Great posture exudes confidence and control. Maintain eye contact, feel comfortable and remember that confidence inspires the best manners.
Gestures and facial expressions: Excessive gesturing shows a lack of confidence and a craving for attention. Your words should be enough to express your emotions in most situations.
Watch your tone: Harshness is not limited to the language chosen but also pertains to the tone used to address another person, adding to the overall image.
Scent: A spritz of cologne or perfume applied to clean skin can make you more attractive on first impression, and a uniquely pleasant scent can act as a memory trigger in the future.
Hands and feet: It is important to pay attention to the appearance of your hands and feet, especially your finger- and toenails. Not only do long nails look bad, but the dirt that collects underneath can reflect a poor sense of hygiene. Similarly, the spaces between the toes accumulate dirt quickly and should be cleaned regularly.
Shoes: A great pair of shoes may not be noticed by everybody, but those who do will form a positive impression of you. For women, it's important to choose the right shoe for every occasion. For men, a high-quality pair of leather shoes will last you a long time and will be very comfortable to wear every day. Always match your belt with your shoes.
Floss: Wash your mouth immediately after eating, as the back of the tongue and bits of food between your teeth can be the two largest sources of bad breath. Make flossing and tongue scraping an essential part of your daily routine.
Smell: A smell that puts other people off is quite hard to erase from the memory. It could be the result of something you ate or a recent workout or just poor hygiene. Whatever the cause, you should prevent the odour by taking frequent showers.
Foot odour: Consider regular washing and scrubbing of the feet to remove dead skin cells. Dry your feet immediately after a bath, especially between the toes. Use thicker socks that absorb sweat, but remember to change them regularly. You can sprinkle some talcum powder in your socks to reduce sweating. In extreme cases, it is recommended to apply a five per cent benzoyl peroxide solution to the soles of your feet to prevent the growth of bacteria.
