Arabic: وائل عباس Born: Nov. 14, 1974 Wael Abbas is a well-known Egyptian blogger and human rights activist. He first became known in 2006 when he began posting videos and shedding light on police abuse and brutality against Egyptians. His blog, Misr Digital (Egyptian Awareness), was created in 2007 and quickly became internationally known. Abbas has been frequently harassed by the Egyptian government and State Security. His YouTube, Yahoo, and Facebook accounts have all been shut down but eventually restored. In 2007, Abbas was named the winner of a journalism award presented by the International Center for Journalists, and he was also named Middle East Person of the Year by CNN.
