Egypt to focus on developing countries during COP 27
Published in Daily News Egypt on 09 - 02 - 2022

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, the President-Designate of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27), discussed Egypt's agenda for the conference with US Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry in a call on Tuesday.
This comes within the framework of the ongoing work to prepare for the COP 27, which will be hosted and chaired by Egypt in November 2022, as well as to continue coordination with the US on international efforts to address climate change.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Hafez said that Shoukry confirmed Egypt's intention as President of the COP 27 to build on the momentum achieved during the COP 26 in Glasgow to strengthen international action and confront climate change at all levels.
This is especially with regard to efforts to adapt to the negative effects of climate change and financing the efforts of developing countries for this purpose.
He added that the Egyptian presidency of the COP 27 will work to reach results that reflect the international ambition to confront climate change, with special attention to supporting developing countries — especially African countries — and that Egypt is counting on the support of the US to achieve those desired results.
The call also dealt with bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of combating climate change, where the importance of activating the joint working group on climate change between the two countries at the earliest opportunity was stressed.
Furthermore, Shoukry highlighted the opportunities available in Egypt for US companies to invest in the fields of new and renewable energy and the green economy, especially in light of achievements made by the Egyptian government towards transitioning to a green economy.
Both officials also expressed the importance of continuous consultation and coordination between the two sides in this regard, especially in light of the strategic relations between Egypt and the US.
