ADDIS ABABA: Google and Kenyan operator Wananchi Group have announced a partnership to launch public wi-fi hotspots across the country in a move aimed at boosting the Kenyan Internet and wireless market. According to a statement from the companies, the Wazi Wi-Fi service is to place hundreds of wireless hotspots at cafes, restaurants, bars and shopping centers in the country to offer users monthly or daily subscriptions for the service. “A daily unlimited subscription costs KES 50, while a month's connection costs from KES 500," the companies said. It added that the service has already been implemented at some 400 spots in Nairobi and Mombasa and plans to develop other hotspot owners to boost the overall infrastructure in Kenya. Joseph Mucheru, Google SSA Ambassador and Kenya Country Lead, said “public hotspots should help drive internet uptake." He added that Kenya “is using just 6 percent of the national internet capacity of 8400G, meaning many more people still need to get online."
