LAGOS: Rep. Odeneye Olusegun (ACN-Ogun), a member of the House of Representatives has revealed that Nigeria is not yet prepared for electronic voting as proposed. He said this in Abuja on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He made this statement on the backdrop of comments made by the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega that “electronic voting was likely in 2015 general elections.” According to Rep. Olusegun, the electoral commission should focus on making the manual system of voting perfect, instead of the proceeding with the electronic system. Because the country currently lacked the infrastructure and the manpower to operate the system which would effectively facilitate the electronic voting process. “I think INEC should concern itself with the manual system we are operating currently,” he said. The legislator said that the current manual system had been marred by late arrival of voting materials experienced in past elections due to a lack of manpower. Commenting on the clamor for a sovereign national conference by some Nigerians, Olusegun said that members of the National Assembly were legitimately elected to represent the people and there were some fundamental problems in the polity that could be addressed by simply making amendments.
