The FBI declared Tuesday that many websites were hacked due to unpatched flaws in their Word Press content management systems, blaming sympathizers of the Islamic State extremist group (IS) for hacking into websites and leaving messages for visitors, Forbes reported. The FBI said "successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities could result in an attacker gaining unauthorized access, bypassing security restrictions, injecting scripts, and stealing cookies from computer systems or network servers. An attacker could install malicious software; manipulate data; or create new accounts with full user privileges for future website exploitation." A UK government-owned website, used for checking air pollution levels, was hacked by a crew calling itself the Moroccan Islamic Union Mail. The hackers left a message denouncing the British government's involvement in Iraq, which was later removed by the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
