Two years ago, a few sports for the physically disabled, including tennis and bell ball for the blind, started to set up separate federations but under the supervision of the Paralympics Committee. Para volley Egypt is the newest such inclusion. Sixteen out of 20 clubs voted for the members of the fledgling federation, electing Hossameddin Mustafa president. Mustafa has worked with Paralympic sports since 1986, becoming head of the Paralympic Committee and president of the International Sitting Volleyball Federation in addition to being the secretary-general of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee. Gamal Helil was elected vice president and ex-Paralympian volleyball player Emad Ramadan became treasurer. Azza Turk, a former TE data manager, Abdel-Fattah Hassan, a TV presenter, and ex-Paralympian and presenter Ehab Hassanean and Gharib Idris are board members. The new federation's logo reflects the various kinds of disabilities and its colours are those of the Egyptian flag. The federation will encompass the two kinds of volleyball: sitting, which is the Paralympic sector, and standing. Egypt's para volleyball team is one of the oldest in the world. Only 18 countries representing three continents play para volley under the umbrella of the World Para Volleyball Federation. Mustafa said Egypt has teams for both men and women and both qualified for the World Championship next year in The Netherlands, “so we are facing heavy duty as the two teams have to be well trained for the event as we are seeking first place. It is well known that Egypt ranks third in the world after Iran and Bosnia. I think we have the abilities to compete and top the world in volleyball but we have to work hard and provide our two national teams with all the facilities that facilitate their training and preparation for the event.” He added that the new federation will “work hard to attract a sponsor that can provide all the federation's necessities and help it spread the game all over the country. My target is to make volleyball the second sport in Egypt after football. “We have referees and coaches but we don't have those who can categorise disabilities as is done abroad and this is a very important branch.” He said all the new federation's competitions and events have to meet international regulations so that the players get used to such rules when playing abroad.
