Anthologyis the first solo exhibition by Egyptian graffiti artist Keizer to be held at Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art.
Opened on 16 October, Keizer, Egypt's own Banksy is back in town with Anthology, his latest exhibition.
Keizer is the pseudonym of an anonymous Egyptian street artist and graffiti artist whose work has gained popularity and notoriety in Egypt following the 2011 January Revolution. The anonymous Keizer is a 33-year-old male who createsstreet art in Cairo on a full-time basis. Known for tackling global issues, oppression and social injustice, he brings back his uncompromising subversive thought, provoking art to Downtown Cairo, where his revolutionary art was first exhibited.Keizer has noted that, although much of his work is political in nature, much of it is also ambiguous or apolitical. The artist has said that, "The whole point is that it's up to you to think and make up your own conclusions." It has always been hard to categorize Keizer's work into one neat box and this is why he doesn't have to worry about being misinterpreted or pigeon-holed. Keizer's versatility is his greatest asset, making us wonder about what's next, and today he finds himself a world-renowned artist, whose works have helped to deliver not only art, but also awareness, cultural appreciation and critical recognition to the masses by not locking them into restricted paradigms of thinking or confided mental landscapes.Keizer's artistic style has been noted as reminiscent of that of Banksy and Shepard Fairey. The text accompanying his images is both Arabic and English. When asked about the use of English in his artwork, Keizer has said that it is “Definitely to attack the upper echelons of society.”
The exhibition runs through 30 November
