Entre Nous: Simply shoe savvy
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 08 - 01 - 2013

Shoes alter your body language and attitude; they can also give your appearance a lift and boost you emotionally. The right pair of shoes can make all the difference when it comes to completing a look. The American actress, producer and former fashion model, Candice Bergen, has said that no matter what one's wardrobe costs, if paired with good shoes, everything looks high quality. She makes a very sound point. As long as the clothes fit well and hair and make-up is done, the shoes can really take the entire look to the next level.
Keeping that in mind, here are the 10 essential shoes every woman should own to look stylish no matter what the occasion.
- The classic black pump (pointed or round toe): The round-toe pump paired with a wrap dress, sheath, suit or trousers is the perfect look for work and the interesting shape makes it just the thing for a night out as well. Pointed toes tend to give a long-legged look and work ideally with cropped pants, but either will do depending upon your outfit.
- Nude pump: A nude pump can instantly add class to any outfit and the right nude — that matches your skin tone — can make legs look longer. Going for patent leather and peep toe nudes add fun elements and are great for work or play.
- Sexy heels: Every woman needs a pair of shoes that make her feel feminine. Such heels are the epitome of sexy as they represent the “allure of skin”.
- Metallic sandals: Whether it's a wedding, a gala, or a night of dancing, metallic sandals add a flawless touch.
- Tall boots: Boots for fall and winter are a style must, as we want to stay warm, but still look trendy. Some prefer flat boots, which are a perfect combination of comfort, style and cosiness. It's also good to own a pair of heeled tall boots.
- Booties, ankle boots or shoe boots: Booties are perfect for all seasons. They're longer than ankle length, so they'd be perfect to wear over jeans. In black or nude, this is a fun alternative when you want to cover more of your foot, but have the feel of a fabulous heel.
- Ballet flats: Comfortable and stylish, these are essential for work, play, errands, weekends, casual and travel. All you need is a black pair, a nude pair and a bold one.
- Flat sandals: A summer staple to wear with ankle jeans, a skirt or a dress. It's great to have a few casual flats and a couple of fancy ones!
- Espadrilles: Another shoe that is fun for summer. They add height without the wobble. You can pair them with ankle or rolled-up jeans, sun dresses, skirts, denim cutoffs and pretty much anything else that's summery!
- Sneakers: Every woman needs to own at least one pair of cute sneakers, besides the ones she works out in.
