Man killed after attack on pro-Morsi sit-in near Cairo University Clashes near Cairo University, where Morsi supporters are holding a sit-in, leaves one dead in the early hours of Tuesday; 15 cars torched in the process
A man was killed in the early hours of Tuesday after unknown masked men attacked a sit-in staged by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi at Nahda Square in front of Cairo University. The Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Morsi hails, said that the victim is one of its members, blaming “thugs” and police forces, who showed up later, for his death. Al-Ahram's Arabic site reported that at least 15 were injured as 17 cars belonged to the protesters were torched and 40 more smashed. The police were sent to the area shortly, having fired teargas in an attempt to end violence. Nahda Square had repeatedly hosted many pro-Morsi rallies. Concurrently, supporters and opponents of deposed president Mohamed Morsi exchanged fire in Egypt's Giza Square (5-10 minutes away by car). Morsi was ousted on 3 July as part of the armed forces' roadmap for Egypt's future, which was enforced following mass nationwide protests against the former elected president. Thousands of Morsi's supporters have since been calling for his reinstatement, launching marches across the nation on a daily basis which recurrently prompt clashes. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/77148.aspx
