Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has demanded a clarification from the Lebanese ambassador to Cauro regarding "offensive statements" by the country's Foreign Affairs Minister Charbel Wehbe of Lebanon's caretaker government towards "the brotherly Arab states and peoples in the Gulf." On Monday, Wehbe suggested during TV statement that Arab Gulf states were behind the rise of the extremist group in Iraq and Syria, before apologising a day after for his remarks. In response, the Saudi foreign ministry strongly condemned in a statement Wehbe for what it deemed as "insulting" remarks and lack of "consistency"with the simplest diplomatic norms," The Kingdom also summoned the Lebanese ambassador to Riyadh on Tuesday in light of Wehbe's remarks. Meanwhile, the Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit was reported by Egypt's state-run news agency MENA as describing the Lebanese top diplomat's remarks as "not appropriate diplomatically." MENA said an official source at the AL quoted Abul Gheit saying that statements by senior Arab officials should reflect feelings of fraternity and mutual respect among the Arab peoples.
