Egyptian Journalists Syndicate is holding today its mid-term elections to select a new head and half of the board members amid security boost. Turnout, however, is reportedly too low to complete the quorum so far. The vote, already adjourned from March owing to coronavirus concerns, is held in a spacious open-air venue in the Teachers' Club in Cairo's El-Gezira. In press remarks on Friday, Khaled Miri, the syndicate's undersecretary , said until 1 pm, only 900 members have registered to vote in the mid-term elections. A quorum of more than 25 percent must be present for the elections to be held, representing about 2,420 journalists. Miri urged journalists voting in the election to abide by the precautionary measures against coronavirus. The vote was scheduled on 19 March before the government had rejected the syndicate's proposal to hold the elections in tents erected outside the syndicate's headquarters in Downtown Cairo. The syndicate had planned to hold the election outside the syndicate's premises to maintain the safety of voters amid the pandemic. Candidates competing for the post of syndicate head are incumbent chairman Diaa Rashwan, Talaat Hashem, Karem Yehia, Refaat Rashad and Mohamed Maghraby. Other 55 candidates are competing for six out of 12 board seats.
