Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski called his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry on Friday to thank Egyptian authorities for their cooperation following the recent death of a Polish tourist in Marsa Alam, Cairo has said.
Magdalena Zuk, 27, died earlier this month in a hospital at the Red Sea resort. Some media reports in Poland have alleged that her death was suspicious. Local sources have said that she committed suicide in hospital due to her unstable mental state.
The Egyptian Forensic Authority began conducting an autopsy on Wednesday, in the attendance of Polish investigators at the request of Warsaw.
Ahmed Abu Zeid, the spokesman for the Egyptian foreign ministry, said in an official statement on Friday that Shoukry told his Polish counterpart that “Egypt will continue giving all forms of support, information exchange, coordination with the Polish side, until finishing the ongoing investigations.”
In statement on Tuesday the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that its consular service remains committed to "cooperate closely and fully" with the investigation led by Egyptian prosecutors.
"We hereby announce that the Polish embassy in Cairo is closely following the proceedings in the case of the death of Polish national Magdalena Ż," said the statement published by the Polish foreign ministry.
"We emphasise that it is the responsibility of the Egyptian authorities to clarify the circumstances of the death. For its part, the Polish side seeks full access to information about the inquiry, including medical records, which will help ascertain what caused the death of the Polish citizen," the statement added.
Poland's President Andrzej Duda is set to visit Egypt in the second half of this year, which marks 90 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Abu Zeid's statement added that both foreign ministers are looking forward to the visit.
Both Shoukry and Waszczykowski also expressed their aspiration towards further coordination and consultation onissues of mutual interest.
