CAIRO: The Egyptian Ministry of Religious Affairs today condemned electoral campaigns inside mosques, saying that the practice was an assault. “The ministry sent leaflets to mosque Imams declaring mosques a place for religious worship and not for political promotion,” Sheikh Fou'aad Abdel Azzim, the deputy minister, told Youm7. “Mosques are the heritage of the Prophet Mohamed and political fights have no place inside these houses of worship,” he said. At the same time, likely Egyptian presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail recently declared that electoral promotion should take place inside mosques.
