Bayern Munich wrapped up their 21st Bundesliga title and completed a domestic double after a drab goalless draw at Wolfsburg on Sunday. The result took the Bavarian giants ten points clear of second-placed Werder Bremen with three matches to go. Bayern wished earlier in the season to claim the treble but Zenit St. Petersburg dashed their hopes. The Russian side thrashed Bayern 4-0 in the second-leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final to cause a huge upset in Europe's secondary competition. Nevertheless, Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld would be happy that his tenure at Allianz Arena ended that way. Hitzfeld, who took over at the club in February 2007, will coach Switzerland in July. Former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann will succeed him at the helm.
Hitzfeld: successful campaign Major Signings Bayern were rewarded for their successful summer spending. The new arrivals played a major role in the team's impressive season. They signed Franck Ribery from Marseille. The French winger made headlines with some splendid displays and scored nine goals in the Bundesliga so far. Luca Toni made a similar impact after his arrival from Fiorentina. The Prolific Italian striker notched 21 goals in the league and led Bayern to a German Cup triumph after scoring a brace against Dortmund in the final. Toni enjoyed a formidable partnership with German frontman Miroslav Klose, who also arrived in the summer from Werder Bremen.
