Chelsea moved closer to retaining their status as Premiership champions after beating Bolton Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday. Skipper John Terry opened the score for Chelsea in the 44th minute, before Frank Lampard secured their victory one minute from the hour-mark. Chelsea are four points short from clinching the Premiership title for the third time in their history with only four matches to go. The Premiership giants maintained their top-spot in the league standings with a tally of 85 points, nine points from second-place Manchester United who were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-zone Sunderland. Bolton's Ricardo Vaz Te squandered his side's most serious chance to score when he fired the ball into the post, giving Chelsea an early scare. With one minute from the break, Terry connected with a fine corner-kick from Lampard to head the opener.
Bergkamp Lampard turned scorer in the 58th minute as he fired home after controlling Hernan Crespo's pass. Elsewhere, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur grabbed victories as they continue to fight over the last qualification spot for next season's UEFA Champions League. Arsenal overcame West Brom 3-1 thanks to goals from Alexander Hleb, Robert Pierce and Dennis Bergkamp, while skipper Nigel Quashie scored the visitors only goal. Tottenham beat Everton 1-0 following a successful Robbie Keane spot-kick in the 33rd minute after being hauled by defender Alan Stubbs. Tottenham, playing without Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' who suffered from a groin injury, hold fourth place with a tally of 61 points, four points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal. The Gunners still have a shot for the fourth spot if they win their coming encounter against Tottenham that will take place on April 22nd. In other matches, Portsmouth beat Middlesbrough 1-0, Fulham defeated Charlton Athletic 2-1, Newcastle United cruised 3-1 past Wigan and West Ham edged 1-0 past Manchester City.
