Basel's hopes of winning the Swiss double were dashed with defeat to rivals Grasshoppers in the final. Missing star winger Mohamed Salah through suspension, Basel lost 4-3 after being held to a 1-1 draw in the match. Egypt midfielder Mohamed Al-Nenni played the whole 120 minutes after Markus Steinhofer's goal for Basel was replied to by Izet Hajrovic. As the match went to penalties, Basel's winter signing Raul Bobadilla missed a crucial penalty, only for Grasshoppers' Milan Vilotic to score the winner from the spot. Grasshoppers are the record holders of the Swiss Cup with 19 titles, but it is their first time in 19 years to win it. Basel remain favorites to retain the league title though as they are six points clear of Grasshoppers with three weeks left.
