ALEXANDRIA (Egypt)- Activists from across Egypt's political spectrum Friday gathered in this coastal city of Alexandria to mark the 40th day since the death of a blogger who was allegedly beaten to death by police in the city last month. The protesters included members of the opposition 6th of April Group, the National Coalition for Change led by former chief of the UN nuclear watchdog and MPs. They chanted against the Emergency Law, which has been in force for 29 years. The Public Prosecutor has referred to trial two police officers alleged to have beaten Khaled Saeed and illegally arresting him. However, they are not charged with his death, which was blamed on his swallowing a packet of drugs. Their trial will open later this month. Human rights groups organised a number of demonstrations in both Cairo and Alexandria last month to protest alleged police brutality. Graphic photos of Saeed, showing his bruised and battered body, have been posted on many Egyptian websites.
